The fifth ISCA/DEGA Workshop on Perceptual Quality of Systems aims to bring together leading professionals and scientists from different fields that are all related to perceptual quality, including Quality of Experience (QoE) and User Experience (UX). Supported by the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik e.V. (DEGA) this event will serve as a forum facilitating for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between both academic and industrial researchers working on different aspects of perceptual quality of systems. Inaugurated in Herne/Mont Cenis (2003) and continued in Berlin (2006), Bautzen (2010) and Vienna (2013), PQS 2016 will return to Berlin, Germany, with this edition.
Perceived quality of technical systems as well as user interaction behavior with such systems is grounded on human experiences and expectations, hence a highly complex and multidimensional phenomenon. Thus, any approach to quality assessment and prediction as well as user behavior analysis and modelling have to take the relevant human factors into account. To date, that has been addressed by a number of scientific disciplines including psychophysics, cognitive psychology, speech and audiovisual quality assessment, human computer interaction (HCI), usability and user experience research, and Quality of Experience (QoE).
4th PQS 2013
The 4th International Workshop on Perceputal Quality of Systems (PQS 2013) was held 2-4 Sept 2013 in Vienna, Austria. PQS 2013 featured two keynote speeches and 33 excellent oral presentations. The first keynote, given by Charles Spence from the University of Oxford demonstrated how the emerging field of multi-sensory integration research is key to the understanding of the perceptual quality of any product or system. The second keynote, given by Geraldine Fitzpatrick from the Technical University of Vienna highlighted the subjective nature of the human experience of a system’s quality and discussed resulting implications for research in this domain. The oral presentations covered different topics addressing not only the quality of audio, voice, video and web/cloud services, but also new assessment methods, the influence of context factors as well as sensory experience and expectations. PQS 2013 was an Interspeech 2013 Satellite Workshop and supported by ISCA and COST Qualinet.

3rd PQS 2010
The 3rd International Workshop on Perceptual Quality of Systems (PQS 2010) was held 6-8 Sept 2010 in Bautzen, Germany. On Monday, a keynote was given by Soren Bech, Bang & Olufsen a/s, on “ The importance of the individual modalities (audio, haptic and video) for user interface design“. On Tuesday, Jens Berger, SwissQual AG. gave a keynote on „P.OLQA-Modell: Objective listening quality assessment“. Nine different sessions took place which touched different aspects of perceptual quality of systems: quality of multimodal perception, audiotactile interaction, audiovisual interaction, sound quality, user quality judgements, perceptual studies on spatial audio reproduction, hearing aids and performance evaluation. A major focus of PQS 2010 was on speech quality with three different sessions. The main organizers were Ute Jekosch & Ercan Altinsoy, Chair of Communication Acoustics, Dresden University of Technology, Sebastian Möller & Alexander Raake, Deutsche Telekom Laboratories, Berlin University of Technology.

2nd PQS 2006
The 2nd ISCA/DEGA Tutorial and Research Workshop on Perceptual Quality of Systems (PQS 2006) took place in Berlin, Germany, 4-6 Sept 2006. Two keynote papers presented their visions: Sasse, M. Angela / Knoche, Hendrik: „Quality in context – an ecological approach to assessing QoS for mobile TV“ and Blauert, Jens: „Real worlds, virtual worlds – and the roots of psychoacoustics“. Eight different sessions covered various topics: sound design, quality of virtual environments, quality of music, quality of speech technology, methodologies and methods, quality in telecommunications, audio and video quality, quality in cars and rooms. The main organizers were S. Möller, A. Raake, U. Jekosch, M. Hanisch.

1st PQS 2003
The first PQS Workshop was initiated as ISCA Tutorial and Research Workshop (ITRW) by Ute Jekosch and Sebastian Möller in 2003. The workshop was focusing on auditory quality and referred to as „First ITRW on Auditory Quality of Systems“. The first PQS 2003 workshop took place at Akademie Mont-Cenis, Herne, Germany, 23-25 April 2003. During the workshop, 24 abstract from 57 different authors were presented.
